My Favorite Pictures This Week (Dec. 7, 2012)

by Elliott on December 7, 2012

Here are my favorite pictures that I saw this week. I found most of these from Twitter.

Sunset Lienz, Tirol

Sunset Lienz, Tirol

This is a landscape of snowy mountains and a bright orange sunset named Sunset Lienz, Tirol from Frederic Hutter.

Porcelain Fighting Figures Dropped

Porcelain Fighting Figures Dropped

Here’s a set of pictures of porcelain fighting figures that were taken after they were dropped and at the moment of impact with the ground. The site says they were taken by Martin Klimas. Thanks Tracey Larvenz for the find.

Andrew Evans, National Geographic's DIGITAL NOMAD

Andrew Evans, National Geographic’s DIGITAL NOMAD

Recently I started following Andrew Evans, National Geographic’s DIGITAL NOMAD. I don’t necessarily have a favorite picture, but just about everything that he posts is great. And it seems like he posts faster than you can read. He’s recently been posting about his adventures in Tanzania. If you follow Andrew, you really get a feel for what he’s experiencing.

Endeavour docked at the International Space Station from Soyuz TMA-20

Endeavour docked at the International Space Station from Soyuz TMA-20

I found this picture from the International Space Station page on Wikipedia. The picture is of Endeavour docked with the International Space Station and was taken from Soyuz TMA-20 on May 23, 2011.

ISS Star Trails: long exposure images of the stars and the Earth from the International Space Station

ISS Star Trails: long exposure images of the stars and the Earth from the International Space Station

My favorite picture(s) goes to a whole flickr set called ISS Star Trails that was taken on the International Space Station from Astronaut and Oregonian Donald Pettit. The pictures are 30 second exposures that were stacked together, or merged, to essentially make really long exposure pictures. Stacking helps reduce image noise that manifests during really long exposures on digital cameras (At least we don’t have reciprocity failure!). Thanks to @ISS_Research, @ISS_CASIS and @NASA for help in finding these.
