Blood Moon

On October 8, the Earth passed directly between the Sun and the Moon causing a Lunar eclipse. The eclipse was visible for several hours and was exceptional to see. The photograph above was taken using a 50mm f/1.8 lens looking through a telescope. When taking pictures through the telescope, I find it much easier to take the pictures with the lens wide open at f/1.8, otherwise the aperture blades will obscure some of the view. The Moon was especially dark because of the eclipse and I had to set the camera to ISO 25600. It was also difficult because the shutter speeds were around 1/20th of a second, so bracketing required a steady hand.

This picture was taken at the tail end of the eclipse. You can see that the Sun is coming up over the Earth a bit and sunlight is hitting the top of the Moon.

Coincidentally, Uranus was at opposition at the exact same time and was only one degree’s viewing distance from the Moon. If you missed the Blood Moon, don’t worry because there will be another one in April of next year. Also save October 23 of this year on your calendars because there will be a partial solar eclipse viewable in the United States.
